Philosophy displays the world: In memory of Páll Skúlason (1945–2015)
Keywords:
Páll SkúlasonAbstract
Páll Skúlason wrote about most areas of philosophy and along with a handful
of other philosophers created a philosophical tradition in Iceland. His topics
range from metaphysics to practical philosophy. Páll Skúlason wrote many
papers on philosophy of education, critical thinking, nature of universities and
the importance of education and democratic schools for a flourishing society.
His paper Education and politics from 1987 ignited my own writings on philosophy
of education. It is noteworthy, that whenever discussing the most
difficult issues of present times, Páll Skúlason always returns to education.
One can, therefore, say about Páll Skúlason, that his philosophy, like that of
John Dewey, is always in one way or another, a philosophy of education. It
also characterizes Páll Skúlason as a philosopher, that he not only wanted to
understand the relation of humans and the world, he wanted to cultivate these
relations. E
